Ontama Don Review: New Japanese Restaurant At Shaw Plaza Balestier Serving Donburis From $15
Ontama Don is located on the ground floor of the revamped Shaw Plaza, right next to its sister brand outlet, Collin’s. Walking along the exterior of the mall, you will be greeted by the numerous Japanese lanterns above the outdoor dining area. If you would like some privacy, you can dine in one of the individual booths adorned with Japanese motifs.
PS: If you have been to Ichiran Ramen in Hongkong or Japan, you would find the booth seating familiar, where ramen is prepared and served by staff, from behind the window blind.
Standard Donburi served with Onsen Egg
On the menu, you can find a variety of donburi, each served with assorted pickles, miso soup, salad and their signature onsen egg. Classics include Bara Chirashi Don ($24) and Ten Don ($19). Meat lovers can opt for Wakatori Don ($15), Gyu Don ($21) or indulge in A5 Wagyu Don ($59).
Bara Chirashi Don consists of an array of sashimi cubes such as salmon and tako, served with tamagoyaki and rice, topped with ikura. We enjoyed the fresh sashimi but the tamagoyaki was a tad too sweet for our liking.
Ten Don features ingredients such as ebi, onsen tamago, shitake and enoki mushrooms, sweet potato, green pepper, carrot and eggpplant. We certainly appreciated the generous selection of tempura, but we would love for the batter to be more flavourful.
Assorted Sashimi and Sushi
If you would like to up your sashimi game, you can order individual servings of sashimi servings ($6++) or sashimi platters ranging from 5 to 6 kinds of sashimi ($11++).
Craving for sushi? There are maki sushi, temaki, nigiri sushi and sushi platters available.
Lastly, Ontama Don also serves classic fried dishes such as Tonkatsu ($12) and Tori Karaage ($15), several alcoholic beverages such as beer, umeshu, sake and even cocktails.
Final Thoughts
Ontama Don is a fuss-free, one-stop Japanese restaurant for wholesome donburi or assorted Japanese snacks and sushi. Enjoy more savings if you order selected donburi at $15++, under Promotion of the Month.
