It is known that the Japanese take great pride in curating the best tasting and looking food on earth. But do you know that even their love for desserts is highly amplified that they will tend to exclaim "Betsubara" after a meal? Betsubara literally translates to "separate stomach" and they use this term as an expression to describe the cravings of eating desserts even after a full meal!
In English, we have a similar expression - There’s always room for desserts!
That's right, from sweet and tangy mochi to the soft classic melonpan, we’ve gathered a family of kawaii kitties from Nyammy Treats with their edible yummy counterparts to sweeten up your day! Read on for a list of some of the more popular Japanese desserts that you can find in Singapore.
1) Mizu Shingen Mochi / Raindrop Cake (水信玄餅)
Raindrop cake is a jelly-like dessert made from water and agar powder that is supposed to resemble a giant raindrop. It is commonly served with brown sugar syrup (kuromitsu) and roasted soybean powder (kinako). The dessert originated in Yamanashi prefecture, which has a Japanese sweets shop that first sold this dessert. However, due to the delicate temperament of this particular dessert, it will melt after some 30mins when served at room temperature.

2) Taiyaki (鯛焼き)
Taiyaki is a classic Japanese street vendor snack in Japan which is a cross between cake and waffles that is fish-shaped. It is commonly filled with red bean paste that is made from sweetened azuki beans. Other common fillings include custard, chocolate, cheese, or sweet potato. This dessert originated from sometime during the Edo period (Tokyo) where marketing-savvy shops started shaping an old dessert, imagawayaki, in the shape of a tai—a type of fish known as Japanese sea bream. The unique design sold better and became the wildly popular taiyaki as we know now.

Traditional melon pan doesn’t contain any melon fillings or flavour, but nowadays some melon pan does have a bit of a melon flavour and are coloured green to make them look more like the fruit. It originated from Japan back in the 1900s when a Japanese entrepreneur brought an Armenian baker to Tokyo and the baker, having worked at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, invented melonpan.

6) Mitarashi Dango (みたらし団子)
Mitarashi Dango are round rice dumplings smothered in a gooey sweet soy glaze and skewered onto bamboo sticks in groups of 3-5. This dessert allegedly got its name, Mitarashi, a festival of a famous shrine in the city of Kyoto in western Japan. Mitarashi Dango was thought to be made as an offering for gods at this shrine in the 14th century. Since then, this dessert has been sold at street vendors in shrines in Kyoto and eventually all over Japan. Today, one can easily find it at Japanese sweet shops and at supermarkets and convenience stores.

Hanami/Sanshoku Dango (花見団子)
Another form of this traditional dessert is the iconic pink, white and green dango on a stick. There is even an emoji for it! Although it is sold all-year round, it is especially popular during the spring season to celebrate Hanami (cherry blossom viewing). The green dango typically is slightly earthy because it is subtly flavoured with mugfort or matcha. The pink dango is sometimes flavoured with sakura or strawberry powder, but usually tastes the same as the white dango. While it is widely popular in Japan, we have yet to find this locally. Nonetheless, you can try making this easy recipe at home!
7) Konpeito / Confetti Candy (金平糖)

This confectionery dessert was introduced to Japan in the early 16th century by Portuguese missionaries and has now become a symbol of Japanese culture where they are used for celebrations and are given as offerings in shrines. They have appeared on numerous anime including Pokemon and the popular film, Spirited Away!
