8 Types of Japanese Food and Where To Get The Best in Singapore

A year in and the COVID pandemic is still affecting billions. Our planned trips to Japan went from ‘postponed’ to ‘canceled’. Though I genuinely wish I am currently basking in the last blooms of cherry blossoms in Hirosaki Park, or dashing across the famous Shibuya crossing, with the pandemic situation, there has been a surge of Japanese openings in Singapore to the point that you’ll bound to find a Japanese restaurant or eatery decked in every corner of this city where you can get your cravings fixed in an instant! Miss that specialty from a particular prefecture? Or even an authentic dish from a renowned state? We compiled a list of 8 Kinds of Japanese Food In Singapore - for your virtual trip to the land of the rising sun.

1. Shabu Shabu - Shaburi

Shabu-shabu is a type of Japanese hotpot, and one will enjoy it with thinly sliced meats and vegetables boiled in soups and served with various dipping sauces.

At Shaburi, you are offered a personalized shabu shabu experience where you are provided your own pot (instead of the conventional shared one with your friends). You are also able to choose your soup from their 5 signature broths - Konbu (their signature seaweed broth), Chicken Collagen Paitan, Sukiyaki, Beef Pepper, and Hot Miso.

Shaburi only offers buffet options for shabu shabu, but rest assured that their meats served are still of a prime quality, which I highly recommend you to opt for their Premium Wagyu Shabu set ($49.80 for Adults during Weekends and Dinner) - their special wagyu slices and Gyūtan (beef tongue) in the set are so worth forking the price.

Good news! Shaburi is offering delivery via Grabfood and Foodpanda, as well as islandwide delivery via Oddle, despite these heightened measures during Phase 2! Click here for more information. Apart from this, takeaway options are also available and Shaburi is currently offering some deals which you can check out their Facebook page for more details!

4. Ramen - Hakata Ikkousha Ramen / Hokkaido Ramen Men-ya Kaiko

Ramen is a Japanese noodle soup where wheat noodles are served in a broth (either meat or fish-based) and flavored with other toppings.

A comfort soul food for most will always be a bowl of thick umami Tonkotsu-broth Ramen, and what better place to have this than a ramen joint that was originated from the birthplace - Hakata Ikkousha Ramen?

Read more about our full review at Hakata Ikkousha Ramen here.

Alternatively, if you are looking at having a different kind of ramen, consider trying Hokkaido-style ramen. Hokkaido is famous for being the home of miso ramen. To top it off, they will include a generous heap of sweet corn and a knob of butter to make the bowl of ramen extra rich and hearty.

From Niku Miso Ramen, to Miso Butter Corn Ramen, Men-ya Kaiko boasts one of the most authentic Hokkaido style ramen in Singapore!

7. Unagi - UYA う屋 • 四代目菊川

Unagi is the Japanese word for freshwater eel. Unagi Donburi is the most common way we would know of to enjoy Unagi. Apart from that, Hitsumabushi has been increasingly popular in recent years.

Hitsumabushi is a specialty dish from Nagoya, consisting of steamed Japanese rice, barbecue grilled Unagi with thick and sweet/savory sauce drizzled generously. What makes Hitsumabushi unique lies in how it is eaten. The dish must be divided into quarters, with the first quarter eaten as it is, the second with assorted seasonings, and the third poured and served with tea and dashi stock. The fourth quarter can be enjoyed in whichever of the previous three manners you liked best.

If you are dying for a bowl of Hitsumabushi, but don’t want to spend hours queuing for Man Man, then here we introduce Uya, located in the heart of Singapore, Wheelock Place, serving authentic Hitsumabushi that will surely satisfy your cravings.

Yakiniku simply means grilled/barbecued meat in Japanese terms.

Opened by a true Japanese, Yakiniku Oh’s restaurant settings and meats available will virtually transport you to Japan. This is a go-to Yakiniku restaurant my Japanese colleagues and I will always visit and relieve ourselves after work! If there are any upcoming birthday or festive celebrations during this heightened alert in Phase 2, but yet you don’t want to settle for ordinary takeaway food, then sit back and order in some Yakiniku Oh’s meats and host an intimate party with your loved ones in the household!
