Pickled Appetisers

Are you picky about your pickles? At Cafe Hachi, you can take your pick from Pickles and Iburigakko (Smoked Daikon Pickles).

Japanese Pickles $5

Japanese pickles (tsukemono) - a simple yet crisp, salty, tangy appetiser fermented in a mixture of roasted rice bran.

Iburigakko (Smoked Daikon Pickles) $8

cage hachi pickles-iburigakko

Savour this rare smoked and pickled vegetable, a type of takuan-zuke (pickled daikon/Japanese white radish) made by a method unique to Akita Prefecture where daikon is smoked instead of sun-dried. Enjoy the crisp texture and a unique smoky aroma mixed with the sweet flavour of daikon. Pair crunchy pickles with slices of cream cheese. They are made for each other.

Fried Foods

Fried food is definitely a staple on a bar menu. Cafe Hachi offers a selection of scrumptious fried food, bound to satisfy any chicken and seafood fans.

Chicken Nanban $8

cafe hachi chicken nanban

Probably one of the most popular Japanese fried chicken dishes, this delicacy features succulent and juicy karaage chicken alongside delicious tartar sauce. Order a glass of beer and you’re all set for a great evening.

Crab Cream Croquette $6

cafe hachi crab cream croquette

Crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside. This is a crunchy crab cake of deliciousness. Eat it on its own or with a dash of tangy tomato sauce for an extra zing.

Nanbanzuke (Fried Fish with Sweet Vinegar Sauce) $6

cafe hachi nanbanzuke

A light and appetising starter - fried fish marinated in a tangy sauce with vegetables. We recommend to pair this with a glass of sake or white wine. Cheers!

Fried Octopus $12

cafe hachi fried octopus

A soft and chewy octopus version of karaage. This is a popular izakaya dish, perfect to pair with any alcoholic drinks.

Seafood Selection

If you would like something light to take the edge off fried food, go for their sashimi and seafood dishes.

Ryukyu (Assorted Sashimi) $15

Ryukyu is originally a sashimi dish/fisherman meal in Oita, Japan. A selection of fresh seasonal fish such as salmon is served. Fun fact: Ryukyu also refers to the chain of Japanese islands that stretch southwest from Kyushu to Taiwan (former name of Okinawa).

Salmon Carpaccio $18

cafe hachi salmon carpaccio

A light and refreshing appetiser which features salmon sashimi with avocado. An excellent dish to pair with sake.

Aburi Mentaiko $12

cafe hachi aburi mentaiko

A flame seared pollack roe dish which is salty, savoury, rich and thick. Experience a taste of the sea as the glorious flavour of mentaiko bursts in your mouth.

Western-style Oden

Oden is a comforting Japanese winter food with fish cakes, hard-boiled eggs, and daikon in a flavourful dashi broth. You may recall seeing it at convenience stores in Japan. Cafe Hachi reinvents this classic comfort food with a Western twist.

Daikon Oden in Porcini Sauce $12

cafe hachi daikon oden

A generous serving of porcini mushroom sauce is poured over a piece of thick and tender daikon. This is a wonderful fusion style which elevates the humble daikon with earthy mushroom tones.

Avocado Oden with Shrimp and Tomato Sauce $16

This was our first time seeing an avocado oden dish. The taste was refreshing, tying the light and bright flavours of each component together.

Whole Tomato Oden with Bacon and Basil $12

cafe hachi tomato oden

A lovely whole tomato dipped in dashi stock. We have to say that the bacon and basil combo added another level of umami to the dish.

Ajillo

A popular tapas dish which is served in Spanish bars and restaurants. It is usually served in a small skillet with main ingredients such as mushrooms and shrimp bubbling away in olive oil and garlic. At Cafe Hachi, the spotlight is on Japanese seafood favourites such as squid, prawn and octopus. There are 7 amazing ajillos for you to choose from! Here are 5 recommendations!

Spicy Octopus Ajillo $8 | Mushroom and Ham Ajillo $8 |
Squid Mentai and Mentai Ajillo $12 |
Chicken Breast and Mushroom Ajillo $8 | Prawn Ajillo $18

We really enjoyed the Chicken Breast and Mushroom Ajillo - a splendid combination for us. We recommend a glass of red wine to pair with this simple but delicious skillet.

Chef Specialities

You can customise the following bone-in meat delights with your preferred choice of sauce - black pepper sauce, Japanese sauce, or red wine sauce. At Cafe Hachi, the chef serves bone-in meat; the bone keeps the meat moist and imparts more flavour than boneless meat.

Charcoal Grilled Spanish Iberico Bone-in Pork Chop (500~600g) $42

cafe hachi iberico pork chop

Forget dry boneless pork chops. The Iberico Bone-in Pork Chop boasted extra flavour and moisture from the bone and fat. The charcoal grill gave the pork a slight char, caramelising the fat and leaving a subtle sweetness.

Grass-fed Bone-in Beef (350~450g) $118

cafe hachi grass-fed beef

A generous portion of beef, served rare, alongside potato wedges and a dollop of wholegrain mustard. We usually prefer our steaks cooked medium rare to medium but we were pleasantly surprised by the tender and juicy meat.

The extensive bar menu also includes other dishes such as tapas- potato gratin, Japanese-Chinese cuisine such as Cold Hakata Tan-tan Men and Hakata Mapo Tofu.

Their drink menu features Suntory Premium Malt Beer, a selection of Highball cocktails such as Yamazaki Highball, Hachi’s Special Matcha High, 5 types of sake, 25 wine labels and 3 types of Shochu (Daiyame, Mitake, Kannoko). Please check with the café on the drink menu price list.

Final Thoughts:

We are excited about Cafe Hachi’s transformation into a bar café by night. This could be your new hangout place after work hours, with your colleagues or friends. We like the fried foods such as Chicken Nanban and Crab Cream Croquette. Our favourite Ajillo dish is Chicken Breast and Mushroom Ajillo. We loved the tender chicken and juicy mushrooms. The portion size is ideal for bar bites and you can experiment pairing each dish with sakes, wines and beer.

You might have already visited Cafe Hachi if you are a matcha fan, we recommend that you also give their Bar Menu a try and experience the “Cafe Hachi Bar-Café” during sunset.
