Review: L'Angélus Introduces 11 New Dishes To Their Menu With A Japanese Twist
Bring your partner on a date night at one of the most romantic french restaurants, L'Angélus. They are one of Singapore’s oldest single-location traditional French restaurants since 1988, serving authentic French cuisine made with the finest ingredients air-flown and completed by a list of unique wines.
The restaurant is decked in Parison-style decor like rattan chairs, vintage wall decor, and a beautiful floral stained glass ceiling. It exudes a cosy and romantic vibe, perfect for a date night!
L'Angélus has unveiled 11 new dishes to its menu- from heavenly entrées to savoury mains to sweet desserts! Read on to find out what I think of the few dishes I have tried.
Entrées
The Oeufs Meurettes ($24++) is so savoury! It is served with two perfectly poached eggs alongside some wild mushrooms, lardons (cubed bacon), croutons, and red wine reduction. Besides, the crouton adds a nice crunch to it!
The beautifully plated entrée, Carpaccio de Saint Jacques ($34++), served with thinly sliced Hokkaido scallop, topinambour purée, black truffle vinaigrette, and pickled radish, left quite an impression on me. The truffle hits the back of my throat and it is so fragrant.
I would say, Ventrèche en Tartare ($34++)-prepared with Japanese bluefin tuna belly tartare, seaweed dressing, and bread chips is my favourite entrée among the rest. I am usually not a big fan of raw dishes, but the Japanese blue fin tuna belly tartare is so fresh and leaves a pleasant umami note in my mouth.
Poissons et Crustacés
If you are a seafood lover, you can't miss out on the Calamars Farcis ($42). The squid is tender and stuffed with flavourful couscous infused with preserved lemon, rosette (ham), and zucchini. Not forgetting the fragrant butter, Italian-style Romesco sauce, and premium ikura served with the dish!
Plats
The pan-roasted Iberico pork from the Pluma Ibérique ($45) is so soft and tender! It is well seasoned with shio koji and finished perfectly with salsify, green apple purée, traditional soubise sauce, and shaved foie gras.

I can’t get enough of the Bœuf Bourguignon ($132) served with assorted vegetables! The Wagyu short ribs are so soft that you can cut them easily! It was marinated overnight with reduced red wine followed by pan-seared and then braised bone-in with tomato paste and stock for five hours. It is also served with a side of creamy homemade pomme puré (mashed potato)!
Desserts
Lavender Crème Brûlée ($16) was my top pick among the 3 desserts I have tried! This creamy, pudding-like dessert is made with rhubarb purée infused with lavender buds and topped off with a homemade sablé Breton (shortbread).
Clafoutis was undeniably enjoyable ($20). This dessert was served hot on a 15cm ceramic pie plate topped with brandied cherry and vanilla ice cream. It puffed up like a little soufflé- soft on the inside and browned around the edges of the dessert. So delicious!
Lastly, I have tried L'Angélus's signature dessert, Crepe Suzette ($26)- made with homemade orange syrup and the classic Grand Marnier. This dessert is one of the highlights as I get to indulge in the experience of watching how this dessert was prepared and flambéd.
But let's not forget how this soft and delicate dessert taste! It exudes a pleasant aroma of orange peel with a subtle smoky note.
Wines
Last but not least, L'Angélus is known for its unique selection of tipples! Pair your food with some of their fine wines like Sancerre ($20 for a 150ml glass) by Lucient Crochet. It is a young and fresh Sauvignon Blanc from Loire Valley that is light-bodied and boasts notes of grapefruit, citrus, hay, and minerals.
2018 Bourgogne- “Septembre” Pinot Noir ($18 for a 150ml glass), light-bodied with notes of black cherry, plum, and liquorice.
2015 La Dame de Montrose- Saint-Estephe ($148 for a bottle) a full-bodies red wine, stellar second wine from the esteemed Château Montrose.
