Review: Mr Yakiniku Serving Affordable Ala-Carte Premium Quality Meat at A Coffee Shop In Ubi!
If you are looking for a place to eat and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, be sure to visit Mr Yakiniku!
They are the first yakiniku casual restaurant offering a plant-based menu with other premium meat and seafood selection in a coffee shop, located directly beside ComfortDelGro Driving Centre!
This place will definitely catch your eye as they have spent some money to decorate the space! It is illuminated with fairy lights across the tent, exuding a cosy and soothing vibe, perfect for a chill gathering with friends and family. It also has an Insta-worthy red-bricked wall featuring Japan's iconic Shinto Shrine and lanterns.
Besides the ambience, I really had an enjoyable dining experience as they provide portable cooling fans- which is a plus point for me, allowing me to enjoy grilling the meal without feeling hot and stuffy!
They offer set menus for dinner that start from $8. It includes Chicken Set (which comes with chicken thigh and chicken breast) priced at $8 for 100g, Beef Set (with Karubi Short Plate and Harami) priced at $10.80 for 100g, and more! Each set menu comes with a bowl of rice, miso soup, and salad.
They also served ala-carte dishes with prices starting from $3 (100g) for the meat, and $5 (100g) for seafood and plant-based meat.
First, I started off with the Yasai Moriawase- Assorted Vegetables ($3) that come with fresh mushrooms, squash, and onions.
Next, I went for the seafood, Hotate- Scallop with Shell ($10 for 3 pieces) and Saikyo Miso Tai- Snapper ($8 for 100g). The Hotate is so soft and it has a delicate texture. However, the Saikyo Miso Tai was disappointing as it was not fresh- has a strong fishy taste. I have also dipped them in the homemade Ponzu sauce and Citrus Salt (made with dehydrated fruits skin like orange, lemon, and lime and blended with salt), which added a little spice and tart-tangy flavor to it.
Moving on to the meats, I have tried the Karubi Prime- Boneless Shortribs ($8 for 50g), Striploin Steak ($13 for 120g), Harami- Skirt Steak ($5 for 50g), Pork Belly ($3 for 50g), and Pork Collar Steak ($7 for 120g).
I was impressed by the meats as they were so tender! It goes especially well with its homemade dipping sauce, Mr Yakiniku Sauce, made with pineapple purée. Alongside Togarashi Salt (mixed with Chill and Seasalt).
My favourite was the Karubi Prime- Boneless Shortribs. It is so juicy and succulent. I have also dipped it in the Onsen Egg- with Truffle ($2.50), and it totally knocked my socks off. The truffle balance off the saltiness of the beef.
Not forgetting the well-marinated savoury Yakitori Chicken Skewer ($6.50 for 4 sticks), it was so soft that it comes off the skewer easily!
We also tried their premium meat, the Wagyu Steak ($18 for 120g), with a marbling score of 4/5. It was so delicious - that it melts in your mouth! You’re definitely paying a lot lesser for the kind of premium quality you’ll enjoy here!
Lastly, I had the Japanese Taro- Yam ($6 for 100g) from the plant-based selection. It was so crunchy when grilled to perfection!
If you are heading there for lunch, they offer Donburi menus that start from $6.90, with a choice of Japanese rice, dry ramen, or salad. I had the Chicken Thigh Donburi with Japanese rice. The chicken was cooked perfectly over the charcoal grill and it comes with an onsen egg, sautéed mushroom, and corn.
Final Thoughts
I would definitely return for the food and experience with my friends and loved ones! The quality of the meat is good and they are priced reasonably. Besides, they provide cooling fans for the customers, which means I can enjoy grilling my meat outdoor without feeling hot and sweaty!
A special shoutout to Tiffany and team for the warm hospitality!
