Review: Value-For-Money Japanese Eatery, Itchy Bun, By Mutton DJs Offers Donburi, Izakaya-Style Bar Bites, and More

If you have walked down the streets of Killiney Road, you would have probably chanced upon this Japanese eatery, Itchy Bun. Opened by the Mutton DJs from Class 95, Justin Ang and Vernon Anthonisz, who are also behind Fook Kin, located just a few doors away.

Itchy Bun offers value-for-money Donburis (from $9.30), izakaya bar bites (from $5.30), and more. I was thrilled that I finally got the opportunity to visit as I am an avid fan of the delights they offer!

The place gives me a warm and nostalgic vibe, with a Kyoto-inspired interior featuring stained wood furniture, Japanese lanterns, and vintage posters.

Tonkatsu Don

We went for the Tonkatsu Don ($12.80) which comes in a generous portion that includes tonkatsu (Japanese pork cutlet), onsen egg, tobiko, rice, and alongside a savoury tonkatsu sauce. The meat was breaded and deep-fried perfectly to golden brown with a nice crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. 

Subarashii Don

Next, we tried the Subarashii Don ($19.80), served with a variety of goodness featuring foie gras, kakuni (braised pork), and chicken karaage. Then finished off with a piece of dried nori (seaweed), tobiko, onsen egg, Japanese pickles, and a drizzle of truffle oil which elevates the flavour of this dish- definitely a plus point for me! Not forgetting to mention, the foie gras is massive, and the kakuni is marinated and braised perfectly with a tender texture.

Itchy Bun Trio

The highlight of this meal was their Itchy Bun Trio ($15.80) which comes with Spicy Karaage BunKakuni Pork Bun, and Mentaiko Crab Bun.

Our favourite among these three was the Mentaiko Crab Bun, served with a soft shell crab, lettuce, and topped with savoury mentaiko sauce and tobiko, sandwiched between a soft and fluffy steam bun. The soft shell crab was fried to perfection and bursting with incredible flavours that go well with the savoury mentaiko sauce.

The Spicy Karaage Bun was packed with lettuce and perfectly marinated juicy chicken karaage. As a fan of spicy food, I was hoping for a stronger kick of spice in this one, but the flavor is otherwise great.

The Kakuni Pork Bun comes with lettuce, kakuni (braised pork), and a generous amount of cheese. The meat was braised and cooked perfectly to create the perfect bite that melts in my mouth with the cheese.

Chicken Crackling with Spicy Ponzu Mayo

Last but not least, we got the Chicken Crackling with Spicy Ponzu Mayo ($6.80). We were blown away by how well it was fried to crispy perfection, and accompanying it was the tangy yet spicy ponzu mayo- a perfect balance of flavours.

Final Thoughts

I would definitely revisit as the price and portion served are worth the money. Besides, the ambience is perfect for a great night out with friends which gives me another reason to visit again.
