Teppan Bar Q Reopens With Refreshed Interior, Brings Back Café Hachi’s Matcha Sweets And More

Matcha enthusiasts, you might have been to Café Hachi X Izakaya Torikin located along Circular Road during its short tenure. Helmed by Chef Kyota Ishida, who also owns Café Hachi and Torikin, Teppan Bar Q is a Hakata-style teppanyaki specialty restaurant nestled in Robertson Quay. After a week of renovation, the cosy hangout reopens with a refreshed interior- minimalist grey on black grey theme; increased bar seating capacity and a private room which seats up to 6 pax. On top of Teppan Bar Q’s extensive grill menu, you also get to relish Café Hachi matcha delights, Izakaya Torikin’s hotpots and Japanese-Spanish bar bites all over again!

Torinabe (Chicken Hotpot)

Hakata Akamaru Torinabe (1 pax) $32 is slightly spicy, boasts a good mix of spicy bean sauce and miso in the soup base. Chicken is simmered in the hot soup, along with generous portions of vegetables including mushrooms and tofu. The vibrant reddish soup might bear some resemblance to kimchi jjigae but it tasted nothing sour like preserved kimchi. In fact, the soup delivered a good balance of spiciness and sweetness from the chicken.

Hakata Collagen Torinabe (1 pax) $35 is essentially a nourishing chicken soup amped with collagen. A must-order for ladies, the light yet flavourful soup warms the soul while collagen beautifies the skin. The chicken was fresh and tender, complemented by ginseng, leek, potatoes and goji berries. Do check out this comforting “chicken soup for the soul”!

Hakata Grilled Delights

From the grill, you can indulge in a wide selection of seafood and meat directly imported from Japan. Fresh catch from the ocean includes Hokkaido Scallop, Tiger Prawn, Hiroshima Oyster, priced at $28++ each. Meat lovers can go for the A4 Kuroge Wagyu ($69++).

Next, load up with scrumptious dishes such as their signature Pork Okonomiyaki ($21++)- savoury Japanese pancake made with flour, eggs, tempura scraps (tenkasu), cabbage, and pork belly slices and topped with a variety of condiments like okonomiyaki sauce, Japanese mayonnaise, dried seaweed, and dried bonito flakes.

Feeling peckish? Check out the Soba Meshi $23++, essentially a wholesome fried soba and rice dish. Fun fact: Sobameshi was first made in Kobe, Hyogo prefecture. A customer brought to an oknomiyaki shop some left over rice and requested the chef to fry Yakisoba with his rice. Making fried rice with Yakisoba, usually worcestershire sauce flavour, was very unique and gained popularity rapidly. At Teppan Bar Q, they pay homage to the origin by using the traditional “Doro sauce” to fry this ultimate combination dish.

One of the comeback side dishes include the Hakata Mentaiko Ajillo ($15++). Ajillo is a popular tapas dish served in a small skillet with main ingredients such as mushrooms, potato and shrimp bubbling away in olive oil and garlic. The spotlight here is on Japanese seafood favourites such as squid, prawn and octopus. We certainly enjoyed the flavourful mentaiko coupled with crunchy potato cubes. Order a glass of white wine to complete your tapas experience!

Late Night Menu

Teppan Bar Q is open from 5pm to 2am daily, pop in for a hearty dinner after work or an indulgent supper during the weekend. The Late Night Menu is available from 10pm onwards, offering a variety of Hakata classics such as Yaki Ramen, Tan Tan Men, Oden, Gyoza and more.

Desserts

Start your matcha course with matcha sweets which use high quality powdered green tea, meticulously grown and produced in Uji Wazuka-cho, Kyoto Japan. Matcha Basque Cheesecake ($10++) presents a burnt cheesecake loaded with green tea flavour, a caramelized top and rich creamy center, adorned with azuki and chestnut on the side. We loved this light cheesecake with a subtly sweet earthy matcha flavour.

Craving for something sweeter, cold and jiggly? Get the Milk Pudding with Matcha ($8++) and Classic Pudding with Ice-cream ($12++). Last but not least, hojicha meets creme brûlée in the Hojicha Creme Brûlée ($8++). The roasted nutty green tea flavour goes perfectly with the creamy custard and caramelized sugar top.

Private Room

Gather your loved ones or colleagues for a private dining experience or a night of celebration in the newly constructed dining room. This cosy space houses up to 6 pax, available for reservation with a minimum spending of $600. Make a reservation here.
