Japan Virtual Travel Series II: 13 Nature Spots to get away from the city hustle

In our first series, we covered the top iconic scenic places from the amazing submissions of our Japan Virtual Travel Contest.

Japan has these sense of tranquility and serenity that cannot be found anywhere else. For those that been to Japan, you will know what i’m referring to. Be it at bustling streets, quiet alleys, historic castles, or sacred shrines, you will find yourself loving every bit of this beautiful country.

Away from the vibrant cities like Tokyo, Osaka, or Nagoya, my kind of ideal getaway is one that takes me to the unfrequented, tranquil, and nature spots. Visualise yourself now somewhere in Japan, hearing the sounds of the pounding water from the waterfall, or the quiet long train rides you take to the isolated park, or an afternoon spent suntanning at a secluded beach - this is my kind of holiday. One which I would find myself feeling even more wholesome than ever.

In this second series, we are covering top nature spots in Japan recommended by our lovely contestants! Read on to find out where you can get away from the city hustle!

Your Dose of Nature

  1. Takachiho Gorge, Miyazaki Prefecture

@frcntas: Kyushu was one of the most scenic places I've been to in Japan. My favorite memory of Kyushu was at the Takachiho Gorge, because you can rent a boat and kayak inside the gorge itself, which is a really fun activity you can do with your loved ones!

2. Kokonoe Yume Grand Suspension Bridge, Ōita Prefecture

@frcntas: Some other highlight of my trip was the Kokonoe Yume Suspension Bridge where I managed to catch the fall foliage!

3. Hirobun, Kibune, Kyoto

Hirobun is slightly off the beaten path (it takes about 50 mins drive from Kyoto city center) and getting there by public transport takes quite a little effort. But @petitesgraines loved the train ride through the residential parts of Kyoto, because it gave her a glimpse of the less touristy side of Japan!

Be sure to try the Hirobun Nagashi Somen at Hirobun, Kibune, Kyoto! Like what @petitesgraines agreed, the long journey only made the noodles and experience even more memorable.

4. Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture

@petitesgraines: I had no particular reason for going to Okayama other than wanting to take a ride on the Shinkansen (had to make the most of my JR pass after all). It’s just an hour’s ride away from Osaka, but this city gives off totally different vibes! Kurashiki, in particular, was my favourite part of Okayama. The weeping willow trees that line that canal area give off an old world charm to the entire place, and adds to the relaxing atmosphere!

Find your Zen

5. Yufuin, Ōita prefecture

For @_toragraphy’s case, Yufuin was the definition of zen. Located in Oita prefecture, the quaint onsen town with Mount Yufu in the background is the perfect getaway from fast-paced city life.

You can also rent a bike like how @_toragraphy did, and cycle through mountain roads and urban areas in Yufuin and Beppu. I bet with you the views are breathtaking!

Lake Kinrin, Yufuin, Japan

6. Arashiyama, Kyoto

@wxnqn: Looking at this photo is exactly what I envision when taking a walk in a bamboo grove, not a crowded and noisy tourist area but a serene and peaceful walk where one is left alone with their thoughts and the nature around us.

This is a shot of Arashiyama Bamboo Grove caught by @wxnqn. Indeed very different from the usual touristy Arashiyama we know.

If you have been to Arashiyama but have not tried the Unagi Hirokawa, then you are missing out on all the good things in life. The unagi in this Michelin-starred restaurant is heavenly (note that i’m not really a big fan of Michelin-starred restaurants), and I dare to say it is the best unagi i had in the whole of Japan!

7. Takayama, Gifu Prefecture

Streets of Takayama appear to be frozen in time.

8. Hakone Shrine, Kanagawa Prefecture

9. Shirogane Blue Pond, Biei, Hokkaido

10. Takaragawa Onsen Osenkaku, Gunma Prefecture

A city away from the city hustle

11. Dazaifu street, Fukuoka

Dazaifu street is home to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and many other popular historical attractions and interesting buys. I urge you to try the Umegae Mochi (Dazaifu’s local speciality) along the pathway after visiting Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine!

I just had it early this year during my countdown trip in Fukuoka, Japan! Soft, chewy, and just the right-amount-of-sweetness, it was a good source of comfort food during the winter season.

12. Ganso Motoyoshiya Unagi Restaurant, Fukuoka

Ganso Motoyoshiya Unagi Restaurant is one of my favourite Unagi restaurants in Fukuoka. It not only serves authentic savoury eel soaked in their traditional secret sauce, the ambience of the restaurant makes a getaway more utter and real.

13. Shimabara Castle, Nagasaki Prefecture

Japan is a place that despite how many times you have been there, you will still find yourself falling in love with it again and again.

Once again, thank you all for sending over these lovely pictures - and keep a lookout for our last Japan Virtual Travel Series III!
