Following its successful reopening on Middle Road in September 2023 is the launch of gelato artisan, Tom's Palette’s second outlet in Kovan! They recently opened doors on 30 March 2024, welcoming gelato fans with sunshine yellow hues with a touch of green, complete with stunning artwork set in a minimalist wooden interior.

Outlet-Exclusive Gelato Flavours

Tom’s Palette offers 18 flavours at any given time, 6 of which rotate from a library of over 230 unique flavours.

Playing on the new shop’s cheery ambience with a spin on the signature Tom’s Palette, Tom’s Six Shades of Yellow ($29.80) features 6 flavours of yellow-hued gelato including Kovan-exclusive creations such as Sober Piña Colada, White Chocolate Passionfruit, and Honey Apricot Cardamom, as well as crowd favourites- Salted Caramel Cheesecake, Kochi Yuzu, and Alphonso Mango Sorbet.

All of the 6 flavours were rather unique and stood out from one another. Our favourite is the Sober Piña Colada- honey pineapple and fresh coconut milk gelato. Think creamy coconut milk gelato with a zesty pineapple twist!

Next, the new store also offers an outlet-exclusive King Pin’s Cone ($7.80) that reimagines the nostalgic local snack putu mayam (steamed rice flour ‘vermicelli’ with shredded coconut and orange sugar). A piece of putu mayam is tucked into a homemade cone, topped with a refreshing scoop of Tekka Market Coconut gelato, then dusted with red sugar.

We could certainly taste the freshness of coconut gelato, crafted with freshly-squeezed coconut milk. It was a perfect cold refresher on a scorching hot day. The overall flavour profile of the sweet treat was well-balanced, refreshing, creamy, nutty and just the right amount of sweetness.

Fun fact: Tom’s Palette’s team pays homage to the history of Kovan in the creation of this coconut delight; particularly the abundant coconut plantation days in the 1900s. In addition, the putu mayam component is inspired by the legendary “Bee Hoon King”, Lim Ah Pin, who was known for his vermicelli business as well as his contributions in the community.

Mainstay Gelato Flavours

Waffles with Granny’s Favourite and White Chocolate Nori

The other 12 mainstay gelato gelato flavours feature classics such as Granny’s Favourite- a nostalgic fusion of chocolate malt gelato with cookie dough and chocolate chip, Jamaican Rum & Raisin, Kyoto Hojicha, Lychee Moroccan Rose as well as a sweet and slightly savoury White Chocolate Nori.

Other innovative flavours for the adventurous include Hangzhou Chrysanthemum, Soya Bean Youtiao, Hainanese Kaya, Nasi Lemak, and more.

Prefer to customise your palette? Get the Tom’s Palette ($29.80) and pick your choice of 6 gelato flavours. Waffles are also available, served with single, double of triple scoop(s) of gelato. If you don’t feel like sharing your gelato, opt for the Single (cup $5.20, cone $6.40) or Double (cup $9.60, cone $10.80).
