Back To Eden Cafe Review: New Vegan Cafe & Micro Bakery At Prinsep Street
You might have heard of Curious Palette- a cosy cafe along Prinsep Street reputed for their premium coffee and fluffy waffles. Well, the popular hangout has rebranded to Back to Eden- a plant-focused artisanal cafe and micro-bakery offering a gratifying brunch menu complemented by scrumptious sides, wholesome smoothies and healthy bakes.
Brunch Menu
Forget meat, pop by Back to Eden for a relaxed brunch and savour their uplifting vegan creations.
What’s more comforting than the heartwarming Mediterranean dish Shakshuka ($18.90)– a chunky tomato stew topped with pumpkin, carrot and Himalayan black salt ‘yolk’, smoked cashew sour cream, and a coarse-grain homemade dukkah, complemented with slices of house-baked herbed focaccia. Adding pumpkin and carrot in replacement of the usual egg ingredient in this Mediterranean dish was nicely executed.
Roasted Roma Tomato Soup ($15.90)- a flavourful tomato soup enriched with a dollop of smoked cashew sour cream, basil oil and fresh basil leaves certainly whetted our appetites but it was slightly over-seasoned for our palates. We personally prefer our tomato soup to retain more of its natural, fresh and tangy flavours. If you are feeling peckish, top up $4 for a Cheese Toastie.
Next, you can’t go wrong with ordering a hearty brunch platter- Crispy Potato Rosti ($18.90) served with herbed cashew sour cream, creamed spinach, sauteèd mushrooms and slow-roasted tomato. Do add-on the velvety Tofu Scramble (+$3) made with tau kwa (firm tofu), oat milk, turmeric and Himalayan black salt. We loved the scrumptious rosti and tofu scramble- it was a creative twist to the regular scrambled egg.
Delectable Side Treats
If you prefer something crispier and more intense, check out the Holy Chips ($11.90) featuring paper-thin deep-fried lotus root tossed in a numbing house-made mala powder. For an extra oomph, try the accompanying Lao Gan Ma mayo dip!
Get your daily dose of fibre with Roasted Butternut Squash ($13.90)- roasted maple-glazed butternut squash atop a luscious pink beet hummus and finished with dukkah. The butternut squash was sweet and tender, paired very well with the refreshing beet hummus.
Waffles, Smoothies and more
Out of all the dishes, we were most excited about the Home-made 10% Whole Wheat Buttermylk Waffles ($14.90) topped with fresh seasonal fruits and pure maple syrup. Our verdict: the waffles are still delicious, albeit slightly denser given that it uses whole wheat flour. Instead of ice-cream, you can add on a plant-based vanilla yoghurt at $5.90.
Last but not least, do check out their extensive range of beverages, including healthy smoothies, and top-notch freshly-brewed coffee and signature cold brew by Strangers’ Reunion. We enjoyed our smoothies- Flamingo ($10.50)- refreshing blend of grapefruit, orange, frozen raspberries, coconut water and maple syrup, and Purple ($10.50)- consisted of blackberries, blueberries, frozen bananas, rolled oats, oat milk, cinnamon and lemon juice.
