Review: New Fun and Whimsical Omakase Concept Kissajin In Shaw Centre With Interesting “Fishing Game”

Kissajin is a new fun and whimsical Omakase concept by the Les Amis Group! Located at Shaw Centre, next to its premium omakase sister establishment, Jinhonten.

Look forward to a specially-curated Omakase menu for each lunch and dinner. The 7-course Omakase lunch is priced at $68++, while the 8-course Omakase dinner is priced at $98++. The menu here changes quarterly to highlight each prime seasonal produce.

Kissajin refers to traditional tea and coffee houses that are a distinct and inimitable part of Japanese culture- hence you may expect a menu with familiar and refreshing flavours prepared by the Head Chef Ryo Yamaguchi alongside Executive Chef Makoto Saito.

This new Omakase restaurant is also different from your usual dining experience! It has a fun and whimsical concept which draw inspiration from the rich Japanese culture and festivals.

As we stepped into this cozy and aesthetic restaurant- decked in wooden and gold elements, we were welcomed by 80s J-Pop music, exuding a warm and welcoming vibe.

We tried the 7-course Omakase lunch and begin the dining experience with a game of yoyo tsuri – a game commonly played at festivals where water balloons are fished out from a tub of water using a hook and a string. We hook up a balloon and then pop it over a bowl to reveal a smooth orb of Goma Tofu, served with a zesty yuzu dressing. So refreshing!

Then, we were served appetisers, Zensai, which comes with seaweed Konjac grazed with a tangy miso mustard sauce, Tazuna Sushi with pounded vinegared tamago roll topped with seasonal fish, smokey and tender Scallop, crispy charcoal-battered chicken Karage, and a cute persimmon-shaped Mochi, stuffed with sweet red bean filling.

Next, we had the soft and silky Chawanmushi- drizzled with savoury Dashi and packed with mushrooms and lotus root. Served alongside are 2 bite-sized Katsu Sando. The bread was so crispy, which goes well with the deep-fried tamago and tender pork katsu. It also comes with a spread of wasabi mayo which elevates the taste of this dish!

Following the Chawanmushi, we savoured this generous piece of grilled Salmon fillet, Yakimon. It has a soft and tender texture and comes with a sweet and savoury note.

Moving on, we tried the Agemono (Fried Prawn), served with shredded cabbage and a spoon of tangy sesame dressing and nanban sauce for dipping. The prawn was fried to perfection- crispy on the outside and soft and succulent on the inside.

Last but not least for the main course is this mini bowl of Gohan, served with 3 slices of melt-in-your-mouth Kagoshima Wagyu, and delicious curry filled with comforting flavours of sweet and savoury with a hint of spice.

We ended off the meal with a sweet and refreshing Dessert, Cream Anmitsu, filled with dainty cubes of jelly, sweet azuki bean paste, and a medley of tasty seasonal fruits and rich cream laced with brown sugar syrup.

Final Thoughts

All the dishes on the course impressed us, and we really enjoyed the dining experience! We will certainly be returning as the dishes were superb, and it is affordable- definitely value for money!
