About Mutsu City, Aomori Prefecture
Mutsu City is located in Shimokita Peninsula, in the northern part of Aomori Prefecture, it is the northernmost city on Honshu, Japan's main island. Mutsu City was originally known as Ominato-Tanabu City, founded in 1959 as a merger of the two towns; Tanabu and Ominato. In 1960, the city was renamed to Mutsu.
Mutsu City has a cool climate and is covered with snow from mid-December through late March. The climate on Shimokita Peninsula closely resembles that of the wine producing region of Burgundy in France, and is therefore said to be well-suited to the cultivation of grapes for wine making. Shimokita Wine is produced in the northernmost winery on Japan’s main island of Honshu.
Mutsu City Attractions
Feel the goodness of Japanese shrines at Tanabu Shrine where a large torii gate faces the street. There is a large hall of worship in front of the shrine and, to the right, a kaguraden with a sense of history.
Aomori Prefecture’s northern climate makes it a suitable habitat for a number of distinct wildlife such as the Japanese macaque (nihon zaru)- the northernmost-living monkey in the world, designated as a National Treasure in Japan. Designed as a natural monument since 1970, Wakinosawa Village Wild Monkey Park is home to around 50 Japanese macaques, also known as the Snow Monkey.
Premium rice produced in Aomori Prefecture
On top of quality seafood and apples, Aomori Prefecture also produces premium Seiten no Heireki rice (青天の霹靂), the first rice variety to be awarded the Special A rank in Aomori. captures the essence of Aomori’s picturesque surroundings. The name of this rice translates to a thunderbolt out of the blue sky, the word “blue” signifies the vibrant blue colour of Aomori, while “heaven” or ‘sky’ represents the expansive northern sky. Additionally, the “thunderbolt” refers to the sudden emergence of rice, resembling a bolt of lightning, under the clear Aomori sky.
Noted for its slightly larger size and light texture, Seiten no Hekireki possesses an elegant lustre and soft gentle whiteness. It is quite sticky and has a tender mouthfeel with a natural sweetness. It pairs exceptionally well with grilled fish, particularly with fish with a slightly higher fat content such as salmon.
Astounding Aomori event at Japan Creative Centre (8 March 2024)
Jointly organised by Mutsu City and Japan Creative Centre, this event showcased the sights, sounds and tastes of Mutsu City to residents of Singapore. The closed door event on 8 March began with a presentation about Aomori Prefecture’s attractions and products followed by a tasting session featuring a medley of sashimi- salmon, ikura, scallops, riceballs, apples alongside apple juice and wines.
SAKANA was the sponsor of the food tasting event, they brought the best of Aomori produce to the table, including raw and boiled scallops, ikura (salmon caviar), salmon and riceballs made from Seiten no Heireki rice . These products are available for sale on SAKANA website.
