Forget traditional chicken and salmon Dons and think out of the box.
We were pretty impressed with the creative menu by established local restaurant group, Creative Eateries. Out of the 10 unique Dons on the menu, Foie Gras Mapo Beef Tofu Don and Nibuta Don (Japanese Stewed Pork Collar) caught our eyes.
1) Foie Gras Mapo Beef Tofu Don
As exciting as the name of the don, the rice bowl was indeed a wonderful combination of premium ingredients and bold spices. The foie gras and beef cubes were tender and flavourful. The mapo tofu packed the right amount of spice and chilli oil for one to enjoy this rich, slightly spicy and numbing tofu delicacy. To fellow Sichuan cuisine lovers, you will like this Don.
On a side note, the ramen egg was a little too sweet for our liking. Nonetheless, you might appreciate the sweetness to take the edge off the spicy mapo tofu.
2) Nibuta Don
Nibuta Don was a bowl of delight, we were pleasantly surprised by the tender stewed pork collar. It was not dry and tough at all, contrary to our presumptions about pork collars losing moisture during the cooking process. We later found out that the pork collar was cooked sous vide* to retain the meat’s natural sweetness and moisture. On a side note, if you are a fan of tsukemono (pickled vegetables), the refreshing pickled chrysanthemum will be right up your alley.
*Sous vide refers to the process of vacuum-sealing food in a bag, then cooking it to a very precise temperature in a water bath.
3) Truffle Trio Mushroom Don
The third don - Truffled Trio Mushroom Don was recommended by the staff. The truffle paste was generously topped on the mushroom trio. As truffle fans, we appreciated the aroma but it unfortunately overpowered the overall flavour profile of the Don. Paired with shoyu rice and well-seasoned mushrooms, the Don became a little cloying after a couple of mouthfuls. We highly recommend opting for the salad or plain Japonica Rice for a lighter rendition of Truffled Trio Mushroom Don.
4) Gyuniku Shogayaki Don (Classic Ginger Shoyu Beef)
If you are wondering how your Don will look like in a takeaway box, this is it. The beef slices in Gyuniku Shogayaki Don were also tender and well-seasoned. This is a classic Ginger Shoyu Beef Don, mix the egg yolk and dig in. Tip: Dons are best enjoyed warm, you may like to gently heat it up in the microwave at home/office for a comforting meal experience.
Note: All Dons come with either salad or rice options. Opt for the former for a no-carb, guilt-free meal. You can also change Beef Fat Rice to Sushi Rice, Japonica Rice or Shoyu Rice.
Bonus: You can customise Bara Chirashi Don and decide which sashimi goes into your bowl of seafood goodness (via the respective delivery platforms)!
5) Spicy Nasu (Spicy Eggplant)
To spice things up, JUU DON also offers a selection of side dishes and add-ons. We had Spicy Nasu (Spicy Eggplant), the eggplant was soft and the spicy garlic certainly fired up our taste buds for the rest of the dining experience.
All in all, we experienced great hospitality and service from the crew from Creative Eateries, the established local restaurant group behind JUU DON. We would definitely order the Foie Gras Mapo Beef Don soon!
