Review: Balinese-themed Café, East Coast Commune, At East Coast Park Serving Chicken and Sourdough Waffle, Tiramisu French Toast & More

Take a step back and wind down this weekend at this cosy café, East Coast Commune, tucked away in Marine Cove, at the beautiful East Coast Park! Celebrate its 2nd anniversary together with its new menu- for brunch, lunch, and all-day dining! They have also prepared special gifts for their picnic sets and have extended service for dinner on Saturdays and Sundays.

Look forward to a medley of wholesome, Western fare with Asian influence dishes curated by the head chef of the award-winning multi-concept F&B venue- The Garage, Chef Sujatha! She has also won the Female title of the World Gourmet Summit Rising Chef of the Year in 2019.

The place is decorated in a Balinese style, incorporating elements like rattan chairs, textured rugs, and indoor plants- it just feels like I am in a café in Bali.

The café is also kids-friendly as they have a play area with toys and books for the little ones.

Here at East Coast Commune, you can find small retail corners around the store showcasing children’s books and dining ware. Keep a lookout for this space as you may also expect pop-up market events that showcase local crafts, design ware, and other artisanal products such as foodstuff, Book-reading, and Craft Workshops for children.

Chicken and Sourdough Waffle ($19)

We kickstarted with the Chicken and Sourdough Waffle- yes, that's right! You have read it correctly. They serve sourdough waffle that is unlike your classic butter waffle- golden and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside! It also has Buffalo Mozzarella melted on the waffle, elevating the flavour of this savoury menu!

Served alongside is a juicy and tender spiced fried chicken, topped with Sriracha cream, chili pepper paste, roasted watermelon, pickled cucumber, paprika, and scallions.

Tiramisu French Toast ($15)

Just when we thought French toast couldn't get any better, we manage to get a taste of their delectable Tiramisu French Toast. Featuring a soft french toast, topped with flavourful espresso-flavoured mascarpone, sweet sliced oranges, sesame coffee crumble, and lady-fingers (a soft and fluffy sponge cake soaked in espresso). This dish is perfect for coffee lovers- bursting with fragrant notes of coffee!

Kale & Strawberry Salad ($22)

Next, we ordered this refreshing bowl of Kale & Strawberry Salad, packed with a variety of ingredients- wilted kale, fresh strawberries, caramelised goat cheese, almond, Tahini, pomegranate, chickpeas, sundried figs, and honey emulsion. Such a perfect bowl of appetizer!

Crab Dashi Linguine ($24)

Then, we had this plate of goodness, featuring the Crab Dashi Linguine from the Lunch menu packed with an intense umami flavour. It comes with Linguine (eggless), dashi cream, pickled kombu in Ponzu, edamame, sesame seeds, lemon breadcrumbs, and crab meat. Not forgetting to mention, they served a generous amount of sweet and succulent crab meat that is enough to go with every bite!

Granny's Apple Tart (5') with Ice Cream ($12)

Moving on to the dessert, we had the delicious Granny's Apple Tart served with vanilla ice cream (+$4), oat crumble, frangipane (almond cream), cinnamon, and miso caramel sauce. The tart was baked perfectly- with a flaky melt-in-your-mouth and crunchy crust. The apples were also bursting with sweet and juicy flavours.

Chocolate Praline Sourdough Waffle ($18)

We also tried this delightful Chocolate Praline Sourdough Waffle that comes with chocolate praline mousse, honeycomb, fresh berries, crystallized hazelnut, icing sugar, and a scoop of summer berries ice cream. The sweet and sour summer berries ice cream is so smooth and creamy which goes perfectly well with the crispy sourdough waffle. What a refreshing dessert!

Iced Hibiscus Passionfruit ($8)

Don't miss out on their selections of rejuvenating beverages such as the sweet Iced Hibiscus Passionfruit, made with Swiss herb berry tea, passion purée, and honey. It has a refreshing taste of passion fruit and a subtle taste of hibiscus.

Green Smoothie ($12)

On the menu, there is also this refreshing Green Smoothie for health-conscious people like me. Blended with avocado, spinach, kale, Greek honey, coconut water, and lemon juice. It is so smooth, creamy, and slightly sweet.

Affogato ($8)

They also serve Affogato for coffee lovers! It comes with vanilla ice cream, double espresso, housemade honeycomb, and cocoa powder. The coffee is rich and fragrant which goes well with the sweet vanilla ice cream.

Final Thoughts

This place is highly worth a visit! The dishes impressed us, and it was definitely worth the money as they come in generous portions. I would definitely head back again as I am already craving the Chicken and Sourdough Waffle and Green Smoothie while writing this.
