Review: Ohayo Mama San Presents IG-Worthy Christmas Delights- Holiday Platter, Christmas Kyuden And More

Source: Ohayo Mama San

Ohayo Mama San, a popular Japanese fusion restaurant & bar at 313@Somerset, best known for its vibrantly casual concept and quality food that feeds the eyes, lips and Instagram feed. This Christmas, Ohayo Mama San presents a merry and bright dining experience featuring a special menu consisting of highly Instagrammable platters, cocktails and even a luxurious high tea set.

Holiday Platter ($38++)

Dig into this scrumptious bento set featuring flavourful soft-shell prawns, savoury salt and pepper calamari, tasty mala karaage and crispy salted egg salmon skin.

You might not be new to soft-shell crabs, how about soft-shell prawns? To be honest, we were a little skeptical when we were told that we could eat the prawns whole, including the prawn heads. Indeed, we enjoyed savouring the whole prawns which were juicy and packed with umami. The salt and pepper calamari were nicely seasoned and not overly chewy. As for the mala karaage, it was flavourful yet mildly spicy, suitable for non-mala/spicy diners.

Great fans of salted egg fish skin might find Ohayo Mama San’s salted egg salmon skin slightly underwhelming in terms of the intensity of salted egg, but we were quite happy with the crispy and thinly sliced salmon skin.

Christmas Kyuden ($28++)

This is a tall tower shelf housing a myriad of sushi such as Lobster Salmon Riceless Rolls, Aburi Wagyu Salsa Sushi and Aburi Spicy Salmon Sushi. The plating of this sushi galore is commendable, you can daintily pick a sushi off the shelf and pose for the ‘Gram!

We loved all of the sushi here, especially the zero-carb Lobster Salmon Riceless Rolls, perfect for ladies. The wagyu beef on the Aburi Wagyu Salsa Sushi was nicely seared, retaining its juicy meaty flavours.

White Christmas High Tea Set ($38++)

Enjoy the best of both sweet and savoury treats with White Christmas High Tea Set, served in the sparkling lustre of fairy lights and a Christmas house. Savouries include Mini Wagyu Sliders, Ocean Shrimp Basket Tarts and Empowered Pappadoms. End on a sweet note with sweets such as Christmas Cupcakes, Mini Tarts and Carolines - an inverted éclair with the pastry dipped in chocolate. All items in this high tea set come in twos and are paired with the festive Red Christmas Tea from TWG.

Cocktails

Behold the Winter Sangria ($20++), a mesmerising and sparkling blue cocktail made of Sui gin, white wine, sparkling water and medley of cut fruits. It was fizzy and refreshing. We certainly enjoyed swirling the drink and gazing at the glistening blue cocktail which put us in the Christmas mood right away.

Snowy Sui Calpis ($20++) featured a mix of Sui gin and fresh Calpis, roasted marshmallow and a red holiday sugar rim. This was hands down one of the sweetest cocktails we have ever tasted. Being fans of Calpis, we were excited to try this concoction but it was a tad too sweet for our liking, especially with the marshmallows and sugar rim. Nonetheless, the creativity of incorporating Christmas lights in the presentation, as well as the overall aesthetics definitely made a statement..

Regular Menu Highlights

Besides the above Christmas delights, we also had The Fireball ($24++), essentially a fried tempura version of lobster sushi. This was our first time having fried sushi, we recommend that you give this a try too!

Last but not least, the revolving Around The World Seafood Tower ($98++) featured seafood from around the world, on a tower, with three signature dipping sauces from Ohayo Mama San’s kitchen. Enjoy experimenting pairing the different sauces with your sashimi or go back to soy sauce and wasabi like us. Note: The seafood used in this seafood tower are from Japan so you can be assured of the quality.

Final Thoughts

If you have been raring to visit Ohayo Mama San, this Christmas season is probably the best time to visit with your loved ones! Not only do you get to savour signature dishes, you also get to indulge in limited time festive delights! All in all, we had a merry dining experience filling our stomachs and capturing photos for the ‘Gram. Moreover, the food quality and concept at Ohayo Mama San are rather exceptional for Japanese fusion cuisine. PS: Do not forget to order Winter Sangria!
