Park Bäckerei Review: Singapore’s First German Pretzel Bakery At Icon Village, Tanjong Pagar

Craving for authentic German pretzel in Singapore? Look no farther than Icon Village, Tanjong Pagar! Founded by Dennis von Berlepsch who hails from Germany, and his wife Jane Lee Richard, Park Bäckerei is the first German pretzel bakery to open in Singapore, offering a rustic line-up of signature lye-dipped breads and pastries; including “brezel”- a true German pretzel. Baked goodies are handcrafted daily and freshly baked on the premises using meticulously-curated ingredients. What’s more, there are wholesome sandwiches, salads and German sausages available for a quick meal fix!

Swabian-style Pretzels and Pretzel-dough Bakes

The star of Park Backerei is Swabian-style Plain Pretzel ($3.90/pc; $10.80/3pcs). Check out its beautiful burnished-brown sheen, and the flavourful exterior crust which goes perfectly with its moist and fluffy interior. There is also a smaller version- Mini Pretzel ($2.50/pc; $20.80/10pcs), ideal for a light afternoon snack.

Next, Cheese Pretzel ($4.50/pc; $12.60/3pcs) and Mini Cheese Pretzel ($2.80/pc; $23.80/10pcs) – a combination of Park Bäckerei’s one-of-a-kind pretzel with cheddar cheese. We love the slightly golden-brown cheese which tops the soft and light pretzel with a savoury crunch.

For those with a sweet tooth, bag the adorable Karamel Igel (caramel hedgehog, $4.40/pc; $8.40/2pcs) – a pretzel bun in the shape of hedgehog filled with a luscious homemade caramel spread. The sweetness level of the caramel spread is just right, its texture is thick and buttery, similar to peanut butter.

You can enjoy the twisted German bread on its own or add on a selection of homemade spreads such as Oktoberfest, Obatzda ($4)– a popular Bavarian cheese spread, tangy Frischkäse ($3) or Butter ($1).

Bagels and Sandwiches

We had a savoury, and a sweet bagel- Jalapeño Cheddar ($7.90) and a delightful Speculoos Apple ($7.50). We are not fans of jalapeño, but we really liked the spicy kicks from the green pepper and cheddar flavours of the bagel.

There is also an array of hearty sandwiches to entice vegans and meat lovers. The German-inspired Sausage Kraut ($15.90) is a scrumptious smoked bratwurst sandwich with crispy fried onions and homemade accompaniments. We also enjoyed the vegetarian-friendly Portobello Sandwich ($14.90) which is made up of herb roasted mushrooms, basil, tomatoes, parmesan, and creamy pesto aioli. The mushrooms were seasoned perfectly and we loved the overall fresh and earthy flavour profile of this sandwich.

Oktoberfest Exclusive

To commemorate the annual beer festival in Germany and the world’s largest beer celebration, Park Bäckerei will be offering an exclusive Oktoberfest Package ($88) that can be shared among friends and family! Available only for delivery and takeaway from 15 September until 29 October 2023, this time-limited bundle includes six Plain Pretzel, two of each kind of sausage – Thuringer Snail Sausage, Nürnberger Sausage and Smoked Bratwursts, as well as a side of tart apple sauerkraut, a piquant counter to the rich and savoury sausages.
